Tips When Company Data Volume Swelling

With ever-increasing volume of data, automated storage technology must also be able to keep up to accommodate such growth.
The most commonly used is to multiply the storage capacity by adding disks. And how that can be used to make storagenya companies can still keep abreast of business is not just that. Here are tips from NetApp as a company you're dealing with the problem.
According to the survey conducted by Enterprise Strategy Group, the IT professionals said that the scalability to support rapid growth of the virtual machine is one of the top three demands of data storage environments.
With the rise of virtualization and the increasing volume of data, the ability to develop (ability to scale) storage becomes the deciding factor for corporate success. Storage environment is required to be flexible and responsive to changing business needs, while still maintaining high efficiency and speed.
"To meet the growing volume of data, one important question to be answered by the CIO is, do they have to perform scale up or scale out existing storage. To make an informed decision, the CIO must first understand the difference between scale up and scale out, "said NetApp, in his statement on Sunday (28/08/2011).
Scale up is to utilize existing storage by adding disk to meet the increasing need. However, there are limits to scale up capacity that depends on how much the maximum storage devices that can be connected to a single storage controller.
When the storage controller is full, then that can be done by the company is replacing the storage controller with a larger capacity so that existing disks still usable without the need to replace it.
Implementation costs are relatively low to perform scale-up storage making it an attractive method to increase capacity.
Scale out, on the other hand, address the capacity problem by providing additional storage systems (nodes). Do scale out storage can be done by grouping the storage system and storage grid.

"More importantly, a scale out solution can have many nodes that are connected though separate geographical locations but still as one system," continued the company that has been poor across the storage of this business.
Scale out also have the potential ability to aggregate IOPS and bandwidth of a storage controller for additional flexibility. Additional node also provides greater availability if one of the nodes have a downtime.
So which one to choose? "Today, CIOs should not choose one from the scale up or scale out. Integrated Architecture provides the ability to do both, scale up and scale out, efficiently and effectively," said NetApp.
Current unified storage architecture provides flexibility for customers to choose the solution that best fits their needs today and in the future.
"As a first step, the CIO must begin by applying methods and more efficient storage management to optimize utilization of existing assets," he concluded.
